Not long ago it was early summer, and a small herd of Dexter cattle had arrived on a trailer from far away. Five minutes later, they disappeared through the fences and it took a whole month, kilometers of fencing and many helpful and capable neighbours to re-realise our cattle-raising dreams. And then this weekend, under a generous tree canopy on the dry needles below, the first tiny calf born of our beautiful, wily cows appeared. Dexter babies are truly tiny, no larger than a spaniel and maybe 30 pounds soaking wet; they are born small and grow fast on their mothers’ rich milk. Mama keeps him far from the other animals but allowed us to visit with hay and water. He has a big sister, who is very proud and is also enjoying the odd sip of Mama’s milk. Welcome to this wild and crazy world, little love.
